Upcoming League Activities — How YOU Can Be Involved!

Shailaja Marion News

Dear LWV Members,

We’ve heard from several of our members who would like to know more about some of our upcoming League activities.

The League of Women Voters of Oklahoma and the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Tulsa have several opportunities for our members to engage with our 2018 – 2019 programs.

League of Women Voters of Oklahoma

Our state LWVOK team has been hard at work on an update of LWVOK Positions on Education.

The scope of the 2017-2019 restudy of the League of Women Voters of Oklahoma position on education will focus on education in the 21st Century. It will begin with a review of the current education-related positions in order to determine what general principles the LWVOK can still affirm. The study will include alternate delivery methods and their impact as well as research into how other states fund common, higher and technical education and why proper funding is crucial.

Study materials may be found here [1] [2] and consensus questions may be found here. Local leagues have until Feb. 15 to respond to the consensus questions.

League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Tulsa

To better prepare for comment on the consensus questions, the LWVMT will focus on the study materials’ key topics at the next several months of morning Meet-Ups.

Breakfast Meet-Ups

All LWVMT breakfast meet-ups are the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Atlas Grill, 415 S. Boston Ave., at 7:30 a.m. Here are upcoming discussion topics:

  • Sept. 25: School Vouchers
  • Oct. 23: Charter Schools
  • Nov. 27: Virtual Classes and Schools
  • December/January (date TBD): Post-Secondary Education

Lunch Meet-Ups

Our LWVMT monthly Lunch Meet-Ups will follow a similar approach, with a focus on expert speakers on educational topics as well as informative podcasts to further our understanding of each topic.

All LWVMT Lunch Meet-Ups are the third Tuesday of each month at the Patti Johnson Wilson Center YWCA, 1910 S. Lewis, at noon. Here are the topics:

Sept. 18: Post-Secondary Education
Oct. 16: Virtual Classes and Schools
Nov.20: School Vouchers
Jan 15: Charter Schools

Hot Topic Lunch

The LWVMT will host a Hot Topic Lunch in October focusing on key state questions that will appear on the November ballot. Watch our webpage and social media for more details.

State Question Panels

In partnership with Oklahoma Watch, the LWVOK is hosting panels on two of the upcoming state questions. On Sept. 18, a panel of experts will discuss State Question 794, also known as Marsy’s Law, in Oklahoma City. On Oct. 16, in Tulsa, another panel of experts will discuss State Question 801, which would allow use of ad valorem taxes for broader educational expenses.

Check our webpages and social media for more information regarding time and location of these panels.

All of the programs and panels listed above are free and open to the public.

Thank you for your membership in the League of Women Voters of Oklahoma and the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Tulsa. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming programs and panels.

And remember to encourage your friends and family to register and vote on Nov. 6!
