DESCRIPTION:For much of the past century, the U.S. Supreme Court was the primary guardian of civil rights and liberties. In many areas — including voting, criminal justice, and reproductive rights — the Court is now backing away from that role. But every state has its own constitution. Fifty separate state constitutions provide numerous rights that do not appear in the federal Constitution. Even where a state constitution contains an identical provision to the federal counterpart, a state’s supreme court is free to interpret it more protectively.\n\nCome learn about these understudied and potentially powerful sources of rights and liberties.
