SUMMARY:PROGRAM: The Powers & Limits of State Constitutions – A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:For much of the past century, the U.S. Supreme Court was the primary guardian of civil rights and liberties. In many areas — including voting, criminal justice, and reproductive rights — the Court is now backing away from that role. But every state has its own constitution. Fifty separate state constitutions provide numerous rights that do not appear in the federal Constitution. Even where a state constitution contains an identical provision to the federal counterpart, a state’s supreme court is free to interpret it more protectively.\n\nCome learn about these understudied and potentially powerful sources of rights and liberties. Kathrina Szymborski Wolfkot, senior counsel at the NYU Law School’s Brennan Center for Justice and managing editor of State Court Report, and Kyle Barry, executive director of the State Law Research Initiative, will lead a discussion about the promise of state constitutions.\n\nState Court Report: https://statecourtreport.org/State Law Research Initiative: https://state-law-research.org/\n\n—-\n\nThis event is not affiliated in any way with the Tulsa City-County Library. The Library neither sponsors nor endorses this event, the speaker(s) or the organization.\n
